Edward Hyde, 3rd Earl of Clarendon (1661-1723), styled Viscount Cornbury between 1674 and 1709, was Governor of New York and New Jersey between 1701 and 1708, and is reputed to have had a predeliction for cross-dressing while in Crown office. Folio Manuscript Document Signed “Cornbury” as Royal Governor of New York and New Jersey, , VG. n official attestation as a witness or acknowledgment, Signed by Lord Cornbury on a bright, clean boldly written full sheet with broad margins, using the reverse side of a prior partial deed or indenture. The paper itself is laid with a large and unusual central watermark which appears to be a church steeple tower with large rays protruding and decorative smaller balls at the tips of the rays.
