A good early Colonial era American Indian Captivity book, entitled: "A Narrative of The Life of Mrs. Mary Jemison Who Was Taken By The Indians in the year 1755, when only about twelve years of age…containing an account of the Murder of her Father and his Family; Her Sufferings; Her Marriage to Two Indians. Her Troubles with Her Children…". Original hard-bound binding, 192pp., small 12mo., written by James E. Seaver, published by Otley, printed by William Walker, 1842. Mary Jemison (1743-1833) who in 1755 during the French and Indian Wars Mary was captured by a band of six Shawnee Indians and four French trappers. While being taken to Fort Duquesne (present day Pittsburg), her family was murdered and scalped. At the fort she was given to the Seneca Indians and grew up in their world until her death in 1833. The title page of the book here for sale says it all and would make for great early reading of an event which is mostly forgotten about in today's society, but was the inspiration for the movie The Last of The Mohicans. Many fine wood cut engravings illustrate this book throughout. Expected wear with toning and foxing, else VG.
