Document Signed as President President of the Continental Congress, “John Hancock,” 11-3/4” x 8-1/2”, November 6, 1776, a commission for Elijah Vors. In part, “In Congress, The delegates of the United States of New Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pensylvania, the Counties of New-Castle, Kent, and Sussex, on Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. We, reposing especial Trust and Confidence in your Patriotism, Valour, Conduct and Fidelity, Do by these Presents, constitute and appoint you to be ‘Major in the Regiment Where of John Peterson Esquire is Colonel.’ in the Army of the United States, raised for the Defence of American Liberty ......” The commission is presented in a professional frame with a very strong, dark Hancock signature.
