ELLSWORTH, OLIVER. Chief Justice, U.S. Supreme Court; chairman of the committee that organized the federal judiciary system; delegate to Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention. Choice war-date Autograph Document Signed, "Oliv. Ellsworth" as member of the Connecticut Pay Table Committee, obl. 8vo [Hartford], Oct. 10, 1775. To John Lawrence, Treasure of Conn., requesting him to "Pay Mr. Peter Knapp Thirteen pounds 2/3 pence Lawful money for Victualling & other Necessaries supplied the Riflemen marching thro' this Colony as per acct. & charge it to the Colony Acct." Signed receipt docket of Knapp on verso. Following the battles of Lexington and Concord, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress voted that 30,000 men be called to arms. Enlistment quotas were set for Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, and the improvised army was ordered into immediate service under Commander-in-Chief George Washington in Massachusetts. The troops, known as the "Boston army," were ill-equipped, mostly carrying their personal firearms and short of all materials, particularity gunpowder.
