A complete and authentic issue of Gentleman’s Magazine, London, disbound, VG. This October 1755 issue has considerable news reports regarding the French 7 Indian War in the colonies. Of most importance is this George Washington report, “Soon after this siezure a body of 100 French and Indians attacked Major Washington, commander of the Virginia forces, who had then with him only 300 men, and obliged him to surrender upon articles of capitulation; altho in the year 1744 Virginians had purchased those very lands of the Indians for a valuable consideration.” The entire report is three pages long. Washington was 23 years old at the time of this report. he participated as a volunteer aide in the ill-fated expedition of General Edward Braddock, where he distinguished himself in the retreat following the climactic Battle of Monongahela. He served from 1755 until 1758 as colonel and commander of the Virginia Regiment, directing the provincial defenses against French and Indian raids and building the regiment into one of the best-trained provincial militias of the time. The Gentleman's Magazine was founded in London, England, by Edward Cave in January 1731. It ran uninterrupted for almost 200 years, until 1922. Cave, who edited The Gentleman's Magazine under the pen name "Sylvanus Urban", was the first to use the term magazine (meaning "storehouse") for a periodical. Contributions to the magazine frequently took the form of letters, addressed to "Mr. Urban". The iconic illustration of St. John's Gate on the front of each issue (occasionally updated over the years) depicted Cave's home, in effect, the magazine's "office".
