A complete and authentic issue of the Gentleman's Magazine, December 1774, 56pp., disbound, VG. From the interior under "Account of the Proceedings of the American Colonists" is the 6-1/2 page report. In part, ".. advice received that the continental congress that met at Philadelphia the 5th of September last broke up on Wednesday the 26th of Oct. and that they had caused their solemn declaration, resolutions and associations to be made public of which the following contain the substance; The good people of several colonies of New Hampshire, Rhode-Island, Massachusetts-Bay, Connecticut, New York ..... have severally elected deputies to meet and sit in general congress ... to take into their most serious consideration the best means of obtaining redress of grievances .. Declare that the inhabitants of the English colonies of North America ... have the following rights ..." The report continues with ten resolutions. It then follows with five separate acts of parliament are "infringements and violations of the rights of the colonists". " ...formed under the auspices of a minister of principles and of a family unfriendly to the Protestant cause and inimical to liberty; we say, at this period, and under the influence of that man, a plan for enslaving your fellow subjects in America was concerted, and has ever since been pertinaciously carrying into execution. ... To what causes, then, are we to attribute the sudden changes of treatment, and that system of slavery, which was prepared for us at the restoration of peace? ... Before we had recovered from the distresses which ever attend war, an attempt was made to drain this country of all its money by the oppressive Stamp Act. ... These exactions, however, can receive no justification from a pretended necessity of protecting and defending us. They are lavishly squandered on court favorites and ministerial dependents, generally avowed enemies to America. ... The people of Boston, then ruled by a governor whom, as well as his predecessor Sir Francis Bernard, all America considers as her enemy, were exceedingly embarrassed. ... While the town was suspended by deliberations on this important subject, the tea was destroyed. ... But if you are determined that your ministers shall wantonly sport with the rights of mankind; if neither the voice of justice, the dictates of the law, the principles of the constitution, or the suggestions of humanity can restrain your hands from shedding human blood in such an impious cause, we must then tell you that we will never submit to be hewers of wood or drawers of water for any ministry or nation in the world. Place us in the same situation that we were at the close of the last war, and our former harmony will be restored.
