c. 1750-1780, American Pewter Tankard, Fine-Very Fine. 5.5"-high, lidless tankard. Due to the lack of markings and certain stylistic differences, it is believed that this tankard was made in the American Colonies. Overall, the piece is in solid, presentable condition, but shows numerous period repairs--no doubt executed by a local pewterer--including repairs to the handle and a patch to the bottom. In addition, there are a few minuscule pinholes through the bottom, the result of corrosion. See Neumann's "Early American Antique Country Furnishings," p. 279, Fig. 1223, for a similar example. An extremely scarce American-made example of the classic form frequently seen in period depictions of taverns.
