Government Imprint, “Message from the President [Andrew Jackson]…"Correspondence in relation to the Seizure of Slaves on board the brigs “Encomium” and “Enterprise”, February 14, 1837. The imprint is 58pp., disbound, VG. Contents include specific details and correspondence regarding these two American Slave Ship Captures. The Enterprise was a United States merchant vessel active in the coastwise slave trade in the early 19th century. Forced into Hamilton, Bermuda waters by bad weather in1835, it carried 78 slaves in addition to other cargo. It became the centre of a minor international incident when the British authorities freed nearly all the slaves it was carrying. Similar occurence with the Encomium, 45 slaves. Ultimately, Britain compensated the owners. Plus, a second imprint, “Message from the President …in relation to the strength and expense of the squadron to be employed on the coast of Africa, December 30, 1842, 6pp., discusses details of creating the first US “Africa Squad, later to be commanded by Naval hero and fervent Abolitionist, Andrew Hull Foote
