A great abolitionist book, entitled: "The ANTI-SLAVERY RECORD", being Vol. III for 1837, published by the American Anti-Slavery Society, New York, 1838. Hardbound, 8vo., 176pp. The book is broken into twelve issue, one for every month of the year. The first issue (January) is entitled: "Twenty-Four Hundred Thousand AMERICANS are now held as SLAVES in these United State", reads, in small part: "We design to fill this number…with testimony as to their actual physical condition [from] the testimony of…mostly slaveholders…". Dozens of testimonies are then given by citizens from all over the South. February deals with colonization. March is entitled: "The Slaveholder's Heart". One quote says it all: "all these things show how much the slaveholders fear-and FEAR is always CRUEL…". April deals with slavery and the right for the North to intervene on the slave's behalf. June deals with "Slave Laws" including "Who May be Held as Slaves…The Power to Punish…The Slave has no Marriage Rights and Prohibition of Mental Instruction…". July's chapter deals with runaway slaves and the first page bears the most iconic portrait of a runaway slave who is running to freedom with a satchel slung over his shoulder. The caption below this engraving says it all: "This picture of a poor fugitive is from one of the stereotype cuts manufactured in this city for the southern market, and used on handbills offering rewards for runaway slaves." Much more interesting content throughout with faded and worn binding and mouse chews, else VG
