Thomas Jefferson Goodwyn (1800-1877) A native of St. Matthews Parish (Calhoun County, S.C.), Goodwyn graduated from South Carolina College in 1820, after which he studied medicine in New York and Philadelphia; in 1826, he married Eliza Elliot Darby; in addition to his medical practice and management of his plantation near Fort Motte, S.C., during the 1830s and 1840s Goodwyn served in various political positions: S.C. State Senator, delegate to the nullification convention; moved to Columbia in 1854, and served as one of the commissioners for construction of the new State House; served as a delegate to the secession convention, served as assistant surgeon in the 2nd SC Artillery. Document Signed , "T. J. Goodwyn", 6-1/2" x 15", January 20, 1860, being a receipt of 50 entries for Mr. James P. Adams cover a period of April 7th, 1859 through December 18th, 1859. The visits are primarily for visits to "child' (likely slave children) but does have visit for Bleading" and for "extracting a tooth". ... plus, Document Signed , "T. J. Goodwyn", March 25, 1857, 6-1/2" x 4" being a receipt of James P. Adams for medical services. James Pickett Adams (1828-1904) was an attorney, state legislator, and plantation owner of Gadsden, in Richland County, S.C.
