A good copper-plate, 8 1/2" x 14", London, ca. 1792, on laid paper, entitled: "The SURRENDER of EARL CORNWALLIS (Lieutenant-General of the British Army in North America) to GENERAL WASHINGTON & COUNT DE ROCHAMBEAU, on the 19th of Oct. 1781_whereby the Post of Yorktown & Gloucester in Virginia, were then given up to the combined Forces of America & France." An exact example of those produced for Barnard's New-Completed Authentic History of England. It is interesting to note that this print does not bear the legend at the top indicating that it was not produced for that book. Therefore, this print was produced as a stand alone although it was accomplished by the same manufacturers. Sculpted by Thornton and drawn by William Hamilton (1751-1801). This print shows General Charles O'Hara, representing General Cornwallis, handing sword to George comte de Rochambeau who is standing next to General George Washington. The print is surrounded by a highly stylized border with a royal military motif at the bottom. From the archives of the famed Kean Archives, Philadelphia. Very good to near fine with light soiling.
