A fascinating Manuscript Document Signed "Saml. Phipps. Cler" 1p. legal folio, [n.p., n.d. late eighteenth century], "An Account of the Severall Charges Relating to Ledia Wymans Childs Birth and Death (which she Cargeth Ebenezer Tompson of Wooburn of Being the father of)..." and lists the various expenses including "To Children Linin... 2 pound and half of Sugor... to otmool....Riscake... 2 Quarts of rum.... 3 weeks nursing... to the midwife... to fetching and entertaining of wimon... 4 weeks loss of time [crossed out]... 2 Journey's to ye Doctor..." Beneath these charges is also listed the "funeral charge" including "a Coffin… glasses and wine... the grave... going down for ye glasses and wine..." In the end Tompson agreed to pay one half of the grand total of £5-18-1, not a small sum in the eighteenth century where the average wage of a day laborer would have been around 4 and half shillings per day. Wymans, for her part, only valued her lost time at less than one shilling per day. Reinforced with Japanese tissue on verso, usual folds, otherwise very good condition
