LEDYARD, John (1700-1771) under the name of New London Society, united for trade and commerce; in 1739, he was one of a committee appointed for the defence of the port at New London; in 1741, the auditor of the Superior Court; in 1742-9, Deputy from Groton to the General Assembly at Hartford, He was appointed with others to inspect the drawing of the lottery authorized to raise £300 for the repairing of the main streets in Hartford. He was greatly interested in the movement made in Connecticut for the protection and education of the Indians; this movement led to the founding of Dartmouth College at the close of 1770. Document Signed, “John Ledyard Esq” 1pp. 7-1/2" x 6" 12 March12, 1769, VG. Hartford. A document orders "The Colony of Connecticut to [pay] John Ledyard for 39 Days auditing Publick ... To 6 Days Man Horse & Expense attending the Assembly ... Pay to John Ledyard Esqr or Order Contents of the Above out of the Publick Treasury."
