War-date Confederate soldier Autograph Letter Signed, W.M. Bacot, 2pp. quarto, March 19, 1865, Smithfield, North Carolina, and reads in part: “...we are constantly on the move. We gave Sherman a whipping day before yesterday, the 17th. They admit a loss of 3500 ours is estimated at 500. ...Tell Liz that we had Peter but he is gone again, he is with Wheelers Cavalry....since I left home, marching all day for weks nad sleeping in the rain, scarcely anything to eat...tell Ron if the Yankees ever go about home to hide himself and horse and if they do go home you must remain at home. I hope they will never get to my home...We are preparing to give Sherman a fight and I think a whipping. Genl. Johnston is with us, so we areall right. Old Joe is hard to beat...” Fine condition.
