Manuscript document, one page, quarto, Bristol, Rhode Island, July 8, 1707, granting Jabez Howland "for the sum of ten pounds current money of New England" the right to sell "Ale, Beer, Cider and Rum." Howland, however, was forbidden to sell drink to "servants Indians or Negros…" Curiously, tavern keeper Jabez Howland was born to Puritan John Howland in 1648. The elder Howland came to America on the Mayflower in 1620. Creases, yet nearly fine condition.
