An interesting comparison of two Sheriff’s Summons, the first issued under the authority of King George the Third, and the second very similar form issued under the authority of the Governor of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Both documents are partially printed, 8” x 6-1/2” and both signed by the same justice of the peace, Andrew Harris. The first is dated May 26, 1775, just five weeks after the Lexington Concord battle. The second is dated November 8, 1783, two months after signing the Treaty of Paris, ending the Revolutionary War.
