ELLSWORTH, Oliver(1745-1807) Great Architect of U.S. Constitution, responsible for bi-cameral legislature for the United States (House of Representatives and Senate), credited with creating the term "The United States", and referred to by John Adams as "The strongest pillar in the Washington Administration"!! Ellsworth succeeded John Jay to become Second Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, and was Minister to France. Autograph Document Signed, “O. Ellsworth”, 1p. oblong octavo, december 13th, 1776, addressed to treasurer Jno. Laurence, it reads in most part: “Pay Seth Roberts by the hand of W. Amos Barnes, One Hundred & three pounds ... for purchase and premium on 417 lbs Salt Petre and charge the state ...” Docketed on verso by Barnes, a Revolutionary war Captain. Fine.
