Exceedingly Scarce, Original 1788 AMERICAN EDITION of: "THE ROYAL STANDARD ENGLISH DICTIONARY." This important 18th century treatise was written by William Perry (c. 1746-1807) and was Printed by Isaiah Thomas, Worcester, Massachusetts. The author was an English lexicographer who first published this work at Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1775. It become immensely popular, having "an extensive circulation both in Great Britain and in the United States." (See Vizetelly's "The Development of The Dictionary of The English Language"). his historic volume numbers 596 pages and measures approx. 5.5" x 5.5" x 2" thick. Imprinted on the first page: “To the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, This Edition of Perry’s Royal Standard English Dictionary, (Being the First Work of the Kind printed in America) Intended to Fix a Standard for the Pronunciation of the English Language, Conformably to the Present Practice of Polite Speakers in Great Britain and the United States; is Humbly Inscribed, by their most Obedient, and Very Humble Servant, Isaiah Thomas, Worcester, January 1, 1788.” Well used condition. Volume bound in contemporary full calf [leather] with black spine label remnant; cover worn, ownership inscription to verso of front cover, front flyleaf lacking, title page stained with edge chipping, scattered toning, staining, minor spotting, edge wear and tearing, etc.
