A great early Southern independence letter, 2pp. 4to., written by a certain "B. H. Broomhead", Newman, Ga., Feb. 8, 1861, concerning Georgia's split with the "old Union", reading, in part: "- the rain - carried from over Flint river - the state road has lost six bridges and some damage to the track in many places - I suppose you have heard - that Georgia is out of the old Union and are of the new Confederacy. The news from Montgomery - say that a provisional government has been formed - I think we will get on well but am fearful we will have some fighting. The (?) thinks not. He is of the opinion that the Black Republicans will back down. I hope so for humanity sake. We can't back but must and doubtless will stand right up to the mark - Truly, B. H. Broomhead." Minor toning, else VG.
