A complete and authentic issue of Gentleman’s Magazine, London, disbound, VG. This March 1757 issue has a 12” x 13-1/2” foldout “A Physical Planisphere, wherin are represented all the known lands and Seas ... traverse Globe, from the North Pole....” This is a nice example of the Gentleman's Magazine edition of Buache's seminal work on the NW Coast of America and NE Coast of Asia. Shows the Sea of the West, marvelous incomplete Australian Coast and many other interesting projections of the period. Part of one of the great scientific/cartographic debates between the royal cartographers of England and France. Jolly Gent-104. Narrow left margin with minor loss, as usual, else a nice example. The Gentleman's Magazine was founded in London, England, by Edward Cave in January 1731. It ran uninterrupted for almost 200 years, until 1922. Cave, who edited The Gentleman's Magazine under the pen name "Sylvanus Urban", was the first to use the term magazine (meaning "storehouse") for a periodical. Contributions to the magazine frequently took the form of letters, addressed to "Mr. Urban". The iconic illustration of St. John's Gate on the front of each issue (occasionally updated over the years) depicted Cave's home, in effect, the magazine's "office".
