Brown defends his Democratic Party, which has always advocated only measures of purely a national character ... It opposed with all its energy and power sectional parties, sectional measures, and sectional men." He denounces that unholy coalition of Democrats and Liberal Republicans which supports Horace Greeley for President. "Mr. Greeley has been a sectional man all his life, and has been the most bitter and uncompromising enemy of the Democratic party." Both Grant and Greeley support the "monstrous" 15th Amendment to the Constitution, granting suffrage to the freedmen. An influential group of dissident Republicans split from the party to form the Liberal Republican Party which nominated Greeley as did the Democratic Party, but to no avail.
