HISTORIC, INSCRIBED CANE TO REVOLUTIONARY WAR AMERICAN OFFICER "Major John Polhemus… A Patriot Of 1776" is the completely authentic, professionally engraved four line inscription on a silver plaque mounted at the top of the stag antler handle of this genuine antique, professionally made, nicely tapered, wooden cane. Three narrow silver band decorations on the upper section. Nice old patina, in its original, untouched, uncleaned condition. Wide tapered brass tip. The piece has never been tampered with, and the plaque and inscription are original to it. John Polhemus is listed in the Heitman "Historical Register of Officers of the Continental Army 1775-1783" having served as "…Captain First New Jersey, 29 October, 1775 to 10 November, 1776; Captain First New Jersey, 22 November, 1776; taken, did not rejoin regiment and was retired 1st January, 1781… died 1831." Significant to note that one other almost identical cane with the identical style plaque and inscription has been noted, leading to believe a few of these were probably made for presentation to New Jersey officers as commemorative items in the years immediately following the Revolutionary War. 37 inches overall. Formerly in the Norm Flayderman Collection.
