WITHERS, Jones Mitchell (1814-1890) was a United States Army officer who fought during the Mexican-American War and later served as a Confederate major general during the American Civil War. He also was a lawyer, politician, and businessman from the state of Alabama. From 1858 to 1861, Withers was the mayor of Mobile, Alabama and as such, he signs "J.M. Withers" on this "State of Alabama, 8%, $1000 Railroad Bond, December 31, 1859, 12-1/2" x 11" with 32 attached $40 coupons. The bond has a closed tear, easily repairable.
