George Huntington Hartford (1833-1917) headed the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P) from 1878 to 1917. During this period, A&P created the concept of the chain grocery store and expanded into the country's largest retailer. Signed Check, "Geo. H. Hartford" as president, on Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company check, March 24, 1914 for $500 issued to The Philadelphia National Bank.
