Thomas Truxtun (or Truxton) (1755-1822) was an American naval officer during the Revolutionary War. Autograph Letter Signed, two ½ pp: "Philada. Novem 11th, 1812, Dear Sir, Your favor of the 6th inst was handed to me by Mr. Biddle. I feel great uneasiness at the dissatisfaction you express in the transaction with Mr. Stevenson but I can with great sincerity declare that I acted with great zeal and attention in my treating with that gentleman and observed all your instructions except that of building back buildings to the eastward of the lot and as that has not been done I ought to be released from any censure. You certainly did not in your instructions prohibit Mr. Stevenson from building on the lot he purchased nor did you confine him to the dimensions of his house…the only intelligence I ever had of him was from Mr. Biddle who is your sincere friend and who knows business well especially what concerns real estate…Samuel Anderson…" Followed by an elegantly penned accounting of Truxtun's account with Samuel Anderson, listing items such as "pd. Mr. Swift mending a key…to postage of a deed, to Gardeners bill." A post script follows: "Since writing the foregoing I have seen Mr. Biddle who says that Mr. Stevenson is answer to a letter Mr. Biddle wrote him declares that he stipulated with your agent (I suppose he means me) that the price of the party wall was included in the purchase money. I solemnly declare that I never made any such agreement, S.A." Postal sent cover: "Commodore Truxtun, Wood Lawn, Near Moore's town, New Jersey" Red 8 pen and unusual round postal stamp. Small tear from wax seal, intact. Commodore Truxton had been a successful privateersman during the American Revolution, a merchant mariner, and a renowned officer. Most attractive and Fine.
