HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW (1807-1882). American poet and educator whose works include "Paul Revere's Ride", The Song of Hiawatha, and Evangeline. He was also the first American to translate Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy and was one of the Fireside Poets from New England. June 23, 1871-Dated, Autograph Letter Signed, "Henry W. Longfellow", one page, measuring about 7" x 4.25", Cambridge, Choice Crisp Very Fine. Sent to an unidentified correspondent (possibly his tax preparer), Longfellow writes: "I enclose a list of Bank Stock held by me, in my own name or as Guardian and Attorney. By the new law all Bank Stock will be taxed in the town where the Bank is located ..." Moderate even tone at the peripheries from a prior framing. Together with a scarce printed 1929 "Certificate of Membership of the Longfellow Memorial Association" fully completed, Choice Very Fine. (2 items)
