A complete and authentic issue of The Gentleman’s Magazine,” August 1791, 96pp., disbound, fine. From the interior is a six page letter regarding the Slave Trade written by a former member of Parliment. This indepth letter discusses all aspects of the trade, but clearly is opposed. In very small part, “Towards the middle of the fifteenth century this accursed traffick began. In the interval of time, Africa has been robbed of sixty millions of inhabitants. Calculation might be lost, in pursuing it as a cause of depopulation through the vast male of all its baneful consequences and effects. Could we only compute the numbers which it has actually and visibly swept from the face of the earth, the account would startle and confound us. Have hurricanes and earthquakes, have pestilence and famine, produced such a bill of mortality? ...”
