SIGSBEE, Charles Dwight (1845-1923) was a Rear Admiral in the United States Navy. In his earlier career he was a pioneering oceanographer and hydrographer. He is best remembered as the captain of the USS Maine, which exploded in Havana harbor, Cuba, in 1898. The explosion set off the events that led up to the start of the Spanish–American War. Typed Letter Signed “Charles D. Sigsbee, Captain, U.S. Navy, 2pp. quarto, U.S.S. Texas, Havanna, Cuba, February 7, 1899, with cover addressed to Mr. Wormwood of the Evening Express, and reads in part: “...You ask me for my view of the battle of Manila Bay. It was remarkable in execution, in immediate results and in moral and political influence. As the opening battle of the war it elevated our national spirit and soldified our confidence in ultimate success. The disproportion of damage between the contestents left our enemy noe of the usual post mortem arguments of the defeated party. It was a victory without error and without question. Its features, while dramatic were also striking in a naval professional sense...It put to sea, visited the enemy’s territory, sunk his vessles, silenced his batteries and thereby conquered his base, which was retained....” More.
