An interesting scale consisting of a 10" wooden beam with hooks on one end and an iron weight with lead fill on the other. The weight slides along the beam which has copper brads embedded in the wood at uniform intervals, apparently marking off various weight levels. In fiddling with this apparatus, it appears that it was capable of measuring some fairly hefty weights! A very intriguing and appealing "do-dad." c. 1700 United States Steelyard Scale, Very Fine.
