Newspaper Group of Six Daily Newspapers, “Newark Daily Advertiser,” 1859, 4pp., disbound, interior page reports. Includes October 17, 1859, Column headline, “Trouble at Harper’s Ferry, Supposed Slave Insurrection,” with brief report “... an armed insurrection has broken out at Harper’s Ferry where an armed band of abolitionists have full possession of the Federal arsenal ... The insurrectionists are numbered about 250 whites and a gang of Negroes ...” ...plus, October 18, column headline, “The Harper’s Ferry Affair, The Slave Insurrection Continues, Bloodshed Both Sides.” Full column report, in part, “The insurrectionists are commanded by Captain Brown of Kansas notoriety ... the whole scheme was got up by Brown who represented that Negroes would rise by the thousands and that Maryland and Virginia would be made free states ... Three of the rioters are lying dead in the streets ... Capt. Brown and his son were both shot.
