Typed Letter Signed, "John Hay" on mourning stationary, Department of State, Washington, February 13, 1905 to Rev. Thomas Green. In large part, "... I have pleasure in sending you a copy of the speech made before the Chamber of Commerce in New York in which the phrase to which you refer, or something like it may be found". The 12 page speech booklet is enclosed. Hay's speech centered on the assignation of President McKinley John Milton Hay was an American statesman and official whose career in government stretched over almost half a century. Beginning as a private secretary and an assistant for Abraham Lincoln, he became a diplomat. He served as United States Secretary of State under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt
