SHIRLEY, William (1694-1771). Shirley served as the colonial Governor of Massachusetts from 1741 to 1756. For a short period of time, he commanded all British forces in North America, capturing the French stronghold of Louisbourg in 1745, during King George's War. William Shirley Letter Signed "W Shirley," one page, 4to, Boston, May 27, 1755, to Horatio Sharpe, n.p., likely Annapolis, Maryland, reading, in part: "This being almost the first Minute I have had to myself since my Arrival here, I with great Pleasure employ it in paying my Compliments to Your Excellency, and assuring you how sensible I am of the many Civilities & favors I received from you at Annapolis…" Here the Royal Governor of Massachusetts pays his compliments to the Proprietary Governor of Maryland. Some damp stains along the lower edge, else fine condition.
