Autograph Letter Signed "W. Shippen," one page, 4to, Philadelphia, August 18, 1797, to Secretary of War James McHenry, n.p., likely Philadelphia, reading: " I have examined Dr. Fournier's Bill - Altho' in its present state it is easy to form an idea of its extravagance, yet it is impossible for me to say it is just and reasonable until the Dr. informs us what medicines he administered; the visits and dressing he made; and the distance the patients were quartered from him - This is uniformly the mode of making out bills - When the Doctor will send such an account, I will cheerfully do everything in my power to render him prompt justice." William Shippen ran the medical department of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Small marginal splits on folds, else very good condition.
