MONROE, JAMES (1758-1831) Fifth President of the United States 1817-25, Virginia Senator and Representative, Governor, Secretary of State and Secretary of War, diplomat, author of the Monroe Doctrine on control in the hemisphere. LEE III, Henry 'Light Horse Harry' (1756-1818) was a cavalry officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. His services on the outpost line of the army earned for him the sobriquet of "Light Horse Harry". His greatest exploit was the brilliant surprise at the Battle of Paulus Hook in New Jersey, on August 19, 1779; for this feat he received a gold medal, a reward given to no other officer below a general's rank in the entire war. He was the Governor of Virginia and a U.S. Congressman, as well as the father of American Civil War general Robert E. Lee. James Monroe Autograph Note in the third person, "Know all men by these present that I, James Monroe of King George county state of Virginia and held and privately bound unto Henry Lee Gen'l of Westmoreland county and state aforesaid in the full and just sum of nineteen hundred and forty pounds at six shillings, to which payment will and timely to be made I bind my (document incomplete) .." On the reverse, Henry Lee autograph note signed, "Rec'd from the hon'l James Monroe August 2nd 1786 five hundred pounds in part payment of his bond. Henry Lee Gen'l.” $500-$750 15 Declaration Signer, Richard Hnery Lee LEE, Richard Henry (1732-1794) Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Virginia. Lee served as President of the Continental Congress, yet opposed the Constitution because it lacked a bill of rights. He served in the Senate and resigned after the Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution. Signed book titled Prose on Several Occasions by George Colman. London: Printed for T. Cadel, in the Strand, 1787. Hardcover, 4.75 x 7.5, 318 pages. Signed on the front pastedown in black ink, “Richard Henry Lee.” Autographic condition: slight feathering to ink and previous owner’s presentation inscription below signature, otherwise fine condition. Book condition is VG. Brown leather-covered boards with red leather title piece on spine; edges heavily worn with boards exposed in several places; spinehead and –tail chipped, and leather torn over approximately 1.5” of spine; rubbed and moderately soiled; foxing and discoloration to interior, mostly at endpapers; dark scribbles over rfep. In VG+ custom-made blue cloth-covered slipcase with leather-covered spine, lightly rubbed and very lightly foxed.
