War-date Union soldier's letter, 5pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Harrison Gibble (Gipple in the CW database), Co. A, 79th Penn. Vols., Marietta, Ga., Oct. 28, 1864, to his friend, Henry C. Gringrich, in part: "…we was detailed to make 10 or 12 miles of railroad…we got it finished last week and the R. R. Superintendent send us to this place…he says we have been out in the field long…he is an Old Penna. His name is Col. Swift. He raised the first Pa. cavalry, but through him being wounded several times. He left his command and is now on this railroad…Genl. Sherman's military school house [is] at this place. Sherman lived for a number of years [here]. The citizens all know him well, but some don't like him too well. The rebs made us some trouble by getting into our rear, but they done it to their sorrow. Their army is getting very small through their raids. Our men have taken thousands of prisoners and have killed an enormous number of them…we are molested every other day by some rebel guerrillas, but no fight we can raise with them. They are always on a run. We captured several the other night at a house about 3 1/2 miles from town. We lost one man killed by bad management [and] one of our regt. shot another man of ours (a new recruit). His name is Staufer from what part of Lancaster county…I could not learn. You wrote…I am set down as a McClellan Sympathizer, or a favorite of Little Mag as they call him. I am no politician…but whoever thinks that I am going to vote for Mag is very much deceived. Lincoln is not my favorite but I will vote for him. I could give you reasons to say so, but space…wont allow it…I am in for to uphold our Union and keep the Stars and Stripes awaving till we are compelled to let it fall…Chambers was somewhat stubborn about voting for Lincoln but I think he will vote for him. If not he wont vote at all. Our regiment is small. We will poll about 325 votes for Lincoln and about 125 votes for Mag or McClellan…hope you may…about the time of the election…take a good Lincoln drink at Mr. Sheiner's with the doctor on my account and tell the Copperheads in your place to give up…for the rebels are compelled to give up before long…H. Gibble." A bit light, else VG.
