Bryan Fairfax (1736 - 1802). Anglican clergymen and Scottish peer, he was the first American born Lord. A lifelong friend of George Washington, Fairfax was given Washington's personal bible upon his death. Autograph Letter Signed "Bryan Fairfax, 1 page. 7" x 9". Barbados, October 8, 1752. Fairfax writes to his grandmother; "It is a long time since I have had the honour to receive a letter from & that of writing to you. Therefore embrace this opportunity that I may not be deprived of that correspondence, which otherwise I might have deserved. It was not altogether for want of inclination that I have been so long silent, but partly for want of time, & partly by not knowing when an opportunity offered before it was too late. I did not think I should have been able to have wrote by this conveyance, not having time for these three of four days, and as Captain Deadman was to have sailed last night, but now I hear he don't sail…" Some loss of paper at lower center of letter. A fine bold signature.
