SMITH, Giles Alexander (1829-1876) Took part in the heaviest fighting at Shiloh and in the advance on Corinth, before becoming colonel of the 8th Missouri Infantry in June, 1862. He commanded a brigade at the attack on Chickasaw Bluffs and the capture of Arkansas Post. He served through the Vicksburg campaign and was commissioned brigadier general. He was severely wounded during the Chattanooga campaign but returned to save the Union left at the Battle of Atlanta. He finished the war leading a division in the "March to the Sea" and into Carolina. Partly-printed Document Signed twice "Giles A. Smith" as colonel of the 8th Missouri, 2p. 31"x10-1/2", being a "Muster Roll of the Field and Staff of the Eighth Regiment of Missouri Inf. Volunteers, in the service of the United States, Colonel Giles A. Smith from the first day of October, 1862, when last mustered, to the thirty-first day of December, 1862" with integral "Pay Roll of the Field and Staff from the 1st day of November 1862 when last paid, to the 31st day of December. 1862" It is signed by Smith as receiving his $390 and also receiving compensation for his two negro servants. It is additionally signed by the other members of the Field and Staff, Lt. Col. David Coleman (five times), Major Dennis Kirby, Lt. Edwin Furber, Surgeon John Bailey, Lt. Fred Clapp, Lt. Troilus Brown and Chaplain Samuel Longhead. These men also claimed their servants all of which are negroes except for the servants of John Bailey who are described as "white". Fine.
