Broadsheet entitled “An Account of the Missions established by the Society late in Connection with the Rev. JOHN WESLEY, for the Conversion of the Negroes in the West Indies.” 2pp. quarto, signed in type by Thomas Coke, Bristol, England, August 13, 1798” and reads in small part: “...In the year 1786, Dr. Coke was driven by stress of weather from the Coast of America to the West Indies. Being thus undesignedly brought to that part of the world, he visited several of the Islands, to examine whether Missions could be usefully established for the benefit of the Heathen in the Archipelago. He accordingly found, that the Negroes were exceedingly susceptible of religious instructions; and having three Preachers with him, he prevailed on them to continue in that part of the Globe...About 50,000 of the Negroes are now under instruction in all the Islands unitedly considered...A very considerable part of these latter are converted to GOD, and give, in their Negro-Dialect, as clear and distinct an account of the work of grace upon the souls as any Believers in England...And it may be added that they have all of them made a sacrifice of their most besetting sin - Polygamy....The Divine Grace and Providence have also raised up about 50 Negro-Preachers, who are very useful on the Lord’s Day; and without whose assistance, the work could not be carried on upon the present extensive scale...” More. Possibly removed from bound volume. Foxing, else very good condition. John Wesley (1703-1791) was a Church of England cleric and Christian theologian. Wesley is largely credited, along with his brother Charles Wesley, as founding the Methodist movement which began when he took to open-air preaching in a similar manner to George Whitefield. In contrast to George Whitefield's Calvinism, Wesley embraced the Armenian doctrines that were dominant in the 18th-century Church of England. Methodism in both forms was a highly successful evangelical movement in the United Kingdom, which encouraged people to experience Jesus Christ personally. Wesley's writing and preachings provided the seeds for both the modern Methodist movement and the Holiness movement, which encompass numerous denominations across the world. In addition, he refined Arminianism with a strong evangelical emphasis on the Reformed doctrine of justification by faith.
