Autograph Letter Signed, “W.B. Middleton” 1st sheriff of Leon County and town of Middletown named for him, 1-1/4p. folio, September 1850, Leon County, Texas, addressed to J.C. Ballero, and reads in part: “...I am somewhat dissatisfied with the course you have taken in this negro matter. I hope you will let the matter rest until the term is out which we agreed upon. I understand that you are coming here with an armed force for the purpose of taking them, I hope sir you will let that alone, it will be sickly for the force that comes here on that business. For my part I intend you shall have the negroes, I am truly surprised at you offering people money to assist you in getting hold of the negroes. Why did you not offer that money to them that had the power to do something...I had no objections to you getting the negroes, you shook my hand and left me with the understanding that the negroes was to stay three months longer, then turned right around and offered money to person to show the negroes and lay the way for the negroes...I this day intend moving them to Charles Haleys where you cannot get without being seen with your crowd...” VG.
