War-date Autograph Letter Signed, "Jos. A. Jordan" 2p. quarto, South Bend, Arkansas, March 27, 1861, and reads in part: "…write me if you received the draft…perhaps you can use this in purchasing a Negro man or boy…I will go to see you should there be war we will not leave this state, but I do not expect that we will have war…" About VG. According to the book “Negro Slavery in Arkansas” Jordan was a very profitable slave owner, who increased his slave stock from 64 slaves in 1850 to 273 slaves in 1860.
