War-date Union Sanitary Commission worker’s Autograph Letter Signed 4pp. octavo, February 25, 1864, Beaufort, North Carolina, with cover addressed to Mrs F.A. Eustis in Milton, Massachusetts, it reads in part: “...I write al lthat I can learn about our Florida defeat of which I made mention in my last letter. Particularly to relieve your apprehensions about the 54th. It was in the fight how much I cannot say. Three of its officers all that I hear of as wounded are here in the same hospital in which Hallowell & James were laid last summer. Littlefield shot in the hand, Tomlinson (doubtful whether he is here) shot in the foot, Capt. Somebody whose name I don’t know, Jewett shot in the neck. I hear of no others in the Regt. Don’t know whether many men were killed or not. 8th Colored Regt. suffered most. Col., Lt. Col. Killed. Regt brought off by Qrmaster. A shocking defeat I should judge....” Fine condition.
