Autograph Letter Signed pertaining to a freed slave wedding in South Carolina, 2pp. quarto, April 16, 1868, and reads in part: “...sometime back we had quite a lively times marrying several to carry the day, it looked like everybody was about to marry at one time. ( I reckon the weather was getting too warm why they ceased) The negroes are taking a fresh start, the weather has no effect on them. Celia our cook is to be married now very soon to Jack Green, we have bought her wedding finery. I know that her relations will be surprised to hear it, she has given up all idea of coming home. She is going to marry in style, she bought a white tarlton, gave $ 1 per yard & a pair of white kid gloves gave $3 for them & other things similar. She wants to look like white people I expect. She still says she will not leave as to live with no one else, she is one out of a thousand....” Fine condition.
