Southern Citizens letter, 4 pgs., Memphis, TN, December 29, 1860. One brother writes to another brother on the pressing issues of secession, in part: "We are having considerable excitement here on the secession question. Although there are a great many who still pretend to think that the Union can be preserved. Gov. Brown delivered a speech at Odd Fellows Hall day before yesterday in favor of at least making an effort to preserve it. On the night of the same day the minute men and seceeders generally were address by Carmin of Memphis and Peter B. Stark of Bolivan County, Miss. They both made very fine speeches. The citizens did the Hon. Andrew Johnson the honor to burn in effigy last week. I don't think I ever saw so much excitement in my life. I understand they hung him in effigy at the junction today - won't oxford give him a lift?" A fine content letter written shortly after the election of Abraham Lincoln and on the cusp of Southern Secession.
