War-date Confederate imprint, 1p. quarto, 'Soldier's Discharge' for Walter M. Gilky of " a private of Captain Chapman's Company 'H' 11 Regiment of Ala. Vol, who was enlisted the 11 day of June one thousand eight hundred and 61 to serve for the war is hereby HONORABLY discharged from the Army of the Confederate States, by an order of the Sec. of War...Given at Richmond, Va., this 16 day of Oct. 1861...." Signed by Captain John Archer. It is additionally endorsed by General Douglas MacArthur's uncle, Charles W. Hardy who was the brother of his mother Mary Hardy, and also endorsed by Capt. D.H. Wood. About VG. With this discharge is a newspaper clipping with letter submitted by W.M. Gilky pertaining to the 'Original Roll of the Pickens County Guards, 1861' of which he was a member. The 11th Alabama was mustered in at Lynchburg, Virginia, on June 17, 1861. Some of the companies making up the regiment had been already in service for several months at the time of mustering. The regiment surrendered at Appomattox Court House. The 11th mustered 1192 men during its existence. The regiment suffered approximately 270 killed in action or mortally wounded and 200 men who died of disease, for a total of approximately 470 fatalities. An additional 170 men were discharged from the regiment and 80 were transferred to other units.
