War-date Confederate soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Tom, Company C, 2nd Virginia Infantry, 4pp. octavo, pencil, Camp at Centreville, November 3, 1861, and reads in part: “...I sent yesterday by Mr. Moody (one of our company who goes home to work in the Factory) a letter to mother...I presume you felt the storm of yesterday. We suffered very much our tents were blown down, everything wet...get Dick McIntyre to describe his visit; the storm was the most severe of any since the war, and we were praying (in Irish) for the Lincoln fleet which has just set sail southward, it must have made some havoc among them, for it came straight from the bosom of old ocean: I recognized it! We were all much disappointed this evening at not hearing orders read for our start to the valley immediately; the order was issued but the time has been postponed ten day...we will be in the valley about the middle of this month, to ‘be quartered’ in or near Winchester. We will probably have a fight below here before we go, if it be possible to get the Yankees to come out of Arlington in force; Beauregard thinks we will...get Mother some Black Tea...get her some snuff also...” Fine condition.
