War-date Confederate soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Tom, Company C, 2nd Virginia Infantry, 3pp. octavo, Camp near Fairfax C. House, October 12, 1861, and reads in part: “...we had Mass this morning in a tent placed between two regiments; a German priest came from Winchester here, the congregation was large, and there was thirty six communicants. The best order prevailed and the sight was very edifying, a large number of men kneeling in the broiling sun during the whole service, and that in the face of hundreds of scoffers and unbelievers. All our Irish boys were there, but the Father spoke such broken English as not to be readily comprehended. ...I reported to Capt. Nodenboush and was detained one day, and then sent down in charge of some prisoners to Fairfax Station...rode on to camp...I found all as usual, Parker, Hunter, Oden & Harlan just came back to camp. The former says I tried to have him arrested when in Martinsburg, he is very much irritated. A party have been sent to all the counties to arrest deserters. All of our Irish boys are well....I tent with Ned Dandridge, by that means I avoid many of the rougher ones in camp; it is as bad as shipboard...” More. Fine condition.
