A great piece of Southern sheet music being a manuscript version of one of the South's most patriotic ballads, entitled: "MY MARYLAND", written by Maryland native James R. Randall in April 1861 in direct response to Union troops being marched through Baltimore while on the way to defend Washington, DC in her hour of need. This nine stanza song immediately became popular throughout Maryland and the South and in 1939 was adopted as Maryland's state song. The lyrics read, in part: "The despot's heel is on thy shore, Maryland, my Maryland! His torch is at thy temple door…avenge the patriotic gore, that wept o'er gallant Baltimore…she meets her sisters on the plain 'Sic Semper' tis her proud refrain…Come! For thy shield is bright and strong, Maryland, my Maryland. Come! For thy dalliance does thee wrong. Maryland, my Maryland…Huzza! She spurns the Northern Scum she breathes-she burns- she'll come…Maryland, my Maryland…". Fine.
