Belcher, 19th South Carolina Infantry, 2pp. quarto, pencil, Lightwood Knot Springs, September 13, 1861, and reads in part: “...I arrived here safely but one day too late to get ‘Sergeant Major’s place in Edwards regt. He had promised a fellow in Hunts Company the place in case I did not get back...but I have been appointed assistant to the Brigade commissary. I did apply to Gen. Jones for the place of ‘Sergeant Major’ so I wish you would see Gen. McGowan and get him to use his influence for me...Give my special regards to Wesley, Lt. Taggart, Q.T. Jordan, Griffin Malone, Capt. Day and all my friends. Tell Lt. Truit I saw Lt. D.H. Jones and he says he has paid the enclose. I cannot find the lost clothes...” with list of members of his unit on verso. About very good condition. The 19th South Carolina served with the Army of the Mississippi and the Army of Tennessee and fought at Corinth, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, the Atlanta campaign and Nashville.
