“Constitution of Virginia”33pp. octavo, with nice green paper cover, inscribed at top in ink “L.Q. Washington” with pencil beneath “Mr. Washington Asst. Secty of State 1850-1851.” Fine condition. Littleton Q. Washington was a ardent secessionist with a minor post in the Buchanan administration. He dispatched a telegram to Governor Pickens of South Carolina telling him that Secretary of the Interior Thompson had resigned over the fact that troops were being sent from New York that evening. This and other leaks alerted the authorities in Charleston to the subsequent arrival the next day of the resupply and reinforcement ship Star of the West. Washington secured a lieutenant's commission in the Confederate Army and served at First Bull Run. He briefly edited the Richmond Examiner before joining the Confederate State Department where he worked with Judah Benjamin for the balance of the war. He knew most of the C.S. government's top people and was a close friend of Mary Chesnut.
