Pair of war-date Confederate officer’s Autograph Letters Signed by Captain George Bouton, and reads in part: [11/10/1861]we had an election on Wednesday the 6th, we all voted for Mr. Morton for Congress. I received a letter from him written on the first in which he solicited our suffrages and told us how much he felt for us on hearing we were very sick, of course he did, as he felt an interest in us as he expected our suffrages...My situation in the battery is much more agreeable than formerly. I find Capt. Maury a very nice gentleman. We are hard at work getting ready for the worst, as the enemy are now down in South Carolina at Port Royal. We may expect them here so soon as they may succeed or fail down there, occasionally we get reports that the enemy are coming but we have had no big scare like the one we had when you were here...[11/21/61]My country requires my services and I must give it, terrible is thing called war. Men shoot big guns and kill each other, we were practicing with 8 inch columbiads yesterday, and would send balls bigger than your mother brought home 2 1/4 miles down the river and when the gun would go off, it would jar everything around, whilest I am writing this the cannon are firing. We are getting ready of the Yankees to come here. We want to shoot as many as possible & they will kill as many of us as possible & perhaps you will then have no Pap to write to you any more...” Fine condition.
